Remiel Vilauclaire

Backstory

Note: I tried to keep spoilers out of this as much as possible. Anything considered a major spoiler is omitted completely, while minor spoilers are marked like this. Questions? Just ask! My DMs are always open.

Short SummaryDiscovered wandering alone near the Quarrymill, a child with no memories save his name, it was by chance that Remiel encountered the elderly man whom he would soon call ‘father’. Their relationship was imperfect, its foundation broken from the start, fracturing bit by well-meaning bit as time went on.A strict and stoic man, his father was sparse with both praise and affection. While he trained Remiel in carpentry and wood-carving, the boy never could live up to his father's lofty expectations, and his true passion soon drifted to the arcane arts. He may have started with healing, but before long his interest morphed into an obsession with thaumaturgy. With no guidance, he eventually succumbed to hubris, aspiring to something beyond his ability—a lesson which came at great cost. Humbled by failure, he ran from the consequences, retreating to the quiet life he knew too well. The shame and remorse would come to colour his future interactions, plaguing him with a persistent, lurking doubt.Content for a time to watch the world from within those four walls, his curiousity amounted to nothing more than wistful, half-finished plans. Though he did continue to practice healing and later delved into arcanima, it was the role of the dutiful son he played best—learning to cook, clean, and practice compassion for others, even those who wrong you. He was able to reconcile with his father shortly before his death and seized the chance to step out into the wider world, putting his limited experience to the test.Unable or unwilling to foster close connections with others, he drifted from job to job, taking carpentry commissions before finding his niche behind the counter of bars and cafes, a smiling shadow lending a friendly ear to those who need it. The impression of a warm, soft-spoken and caring man would oft cause others to entrust their secrets to him, and while he served as a source of comfort where he could, he rarely confided in them in kind. He still searches for a purpose, and finds what contentment he can by living vicariously through stories—in books, overheard in passing, or in the treasured tales shared with him by those he’s come to care about.Continued:These days, Remiel puts far more effort into bridging the gap that exists between himself and those he's come to call 'family'. While fear remains his constant companion, no longer does he listen to its whispers, its urgings, its warnings. He tries instead to do for others what his loved ones have done for him, acting as their strength and support for however long they might permit. The most prominent example is in Villanelle, his closest friend, cherished partner, and love of his life. It was in no small part due to her influence that he has learned to look ahead, rather than behind. Whether his newfound hopes will be realized still remains to be seen, but he finds his smile doesn't weigh as heavy these days as it did in years past.

Misc• He stands on the shorter side, with an unusually pale complexion and dark circles under his eyes. Beneath a mess of purple hair, grey eyes hide behind thick, black frames. A long scar spans the length of his left palm, and many more of varying sizes run across the top of each—hidden by gloves he never removes. A criss-cross of scars also run across his back, faint and not noticeable at a glance. While his style tends towards suits and ties, he can occasionally be spotted in more relaxed dress.• Remiel's accent is an amalgamation of Sharlayan, Shroud, and Old Gelmorran, noticeable mostly in his odd pronunciation of certain words.• His father was a Hyur named Warren Hayes, a former Sharlayan scholar who retired overseas in Gridania. While tight-lipped on his field of study, numerous texts in his house suggested a man with well-rounded knowledge of Aetherology. Despite his best efforts, he wasn't well suited to parenthood, offering little in the way or encouragement or warmth. While they did develop a bond, it came perhaps too late in life.Light Spoilers: He has little control over how much aether he can draw or expend. As most arcane arts draw upon the caster's own personal reserves, the use of magic taxes him greatly. As such, he avoids combat and other situations requiring excessive channeling of aether. Additionally, certain circumstances have lead to him having a drastically shortened lifespan—an issue he's currently attempting to resolve.

About Me (OOC)

Hello! I enjoy writing just about anything, from slice of life/fluff to dark/mature themes. I'm also comfortable saying that there are very few scenarios I'll decline to RP.All I request is that people check in with me before initiating scenes that might involve violence or intense conflict (and I'll be sure to do the same!). I also prefer a discussion in advance of romance and/or ERP, as I'm not very experienced in those areas and would like to establish boundaries and expectations. In general, I feel most comfortable writing NSFW content with people I'm familiar with OOC.The only topics I absolutely won't write are character death and polyamory/multi-ship, but most everything else is on the table!I can be reached on discord if needed (username radiant.dawn). Please don't be shy if you have questions or concerns, or if you'd like to arrange a scene. My schedule can be a bit unforgiving, but I'm more than willing to set up RP dates! There's nothing quite like a good slow-burn and I love watching my character grow alongside others. Seeing all the the small, subtle ways in which he and his connections change over a long period of time is what makes this hobby so rewarding. ♥

Roleplay

Character Notes & Hooks:Magic and the Arcane: Remiel has a burning curiousity for any and all things arcane, what some might describe as a voracious thirst for knowledge. He's a self-taught practitioner of both Conjury and Arcanima magicks, though he rarely mentions it and describes himself as a hobbyist on the rare occasion the subject comes up. He understates his intelligence, at times even playing the part of the overeager student.Aethersight: If your character has aethersight/aethersense, they may notice that Remiel's aetheric concentration is abnormally thin, and in fact would be more typical of a man thrice his age.Carpentry: While not something he's passionate about, he is a carpenter by trade. Need repairs? Want some furniture made? Odds are he'll be happy to lend a helping hand.Duskwight Heritage: Remiel was adopted by a Hyur, resulting in him knowing little of his heritage other than what he's found in the pages of his many texts. He feels the disconnect keenly, though the yearning for that missing piece scarcely manifests as anything more than polite inquiries made of other Duskwight.Knowledge: He can almost always be found reading alone in a quiet corner. Ask him what he's reading or better yet, share a personal recommendation. I use ideas from previous RP to determine what book he has in hand each day.Hobbies: He loves to bake and has taken to other creative hobbies, most which utilize skills he's picked up over the course of his carpentry career. They include whittling, wood carving, and pyrography. His ability to sketch is limited to objects, as he finds it near impossible to capture the complexity of human emotion on paper.More to be added later...

Roleplay◘ I generally try to match the format of whoever I'm RPing with, be it /say, /tell, or /em.◘ Please be patient with me in early interactions. The 'two strangers in an elevator making awkward small talk about the weather' vibe usually goes away once a bit of trust is established between our characters.◘ I prefer to discuss romantic roleplay in advance. In part, this is to avoid misunderstandings or future disappointment, but I also don't feel the most comfortable initiating these scenes without the explicit go-ahead from the other player.Disclaimers: IC =/= OOC. My character is not me, his thoughts and feelings don't reflect my own. I also have little experience with ERP, but I'm comfortable with mature topics in the right context. I'm fairly easygoing in most regards! Please ask if ever uncertain!

Personality

The first impression paints a picture of a quiet man—friendly, yet distant; warm, yet shy. However, those who make the effort to know him will share an entirely different picture: one of someone kind and gentle, willing to shoulder others' burdens and ask for nothing in return. He can be awkward around people he isn't well acquainted with, but despite how easily he flusters, he remains well-mannered.Remiel is also sorely lacking in confidence, although he does posses a hidden humour, a quiet resolve, and a scarce-seen determination. Striving to improve wheresoever he can, it's his past failings that serve to keep him humble.

Continued:With an easygoing, accepting nature and a calming presence, he can easily misdirect people as to his true thoughts and feelings. While improving of late, Remiel has a habit of holding even those he calls 'friend' at arm's length, often without actually meaning to. Being guarded with his own emotions, he also tends to favour exchanges of pleasantries or humour over a genuine heart-to-heart. While he has moments of sincerity, for him to truly open up to someone is rare, and it's rarer still that he allows himself to be vulnerable. It should come as no surprise that he avoids sharing personal information, preferring to let his smile do the talking while guiding conversations in a way that shifts the focus to others. Those wishing for a more meaningful relationship most often find success when approaching interactions with equal parts patience, persistence, and perception.
